Mosquito Control

When spring and summer come around, you don’t want to be stuck inside all day. Who wants to waste that gorgeous sunshine and the balmy weather in Jackson, MS?

Unfortunately, it’s not only humans that enjoy the warmer months. It’s also a great time for bugs too. Of all the insects out there, mosquitoes probably rate the highest when it comes to the annoyance factor.

It’s bad enough when that droning buzz of theirs keeps you awake at night. What’s even worse, though, is when they decide to use your body as a snack pack. They end up having a nice meal, and you end up looking like someone was playing connect the dots.

And, what’s worse, they can spread diseases like malaria and the Zika virus. It’s enough to send you running back inside fast! But, what can you do to thwart the next mosquito invasion? Here are some tips.

Call Us in to Assess the Situation

If you’re in Jackson, MS, give us a call, and we’ll send someone out to take a look at your property. Our consultant will:

  • Assess the extent of the problem;

  • Identify any potential trouble spots that need to be dealt with;

  • Look for where the breeding grounds are;

  • Speak to you about your options; and

  • Come up with a plan that will suit you and your lifestyle.

If you’re looking for the most efficient way to deal with the problem fast, this is it. Our highly trained consultants know what to look for. They’ll quickly identify the source of the problem.

Considering that mosquitoes are adept at hiding out, it can be hard for the layperson to identify where they’re breeding. It could be in a pond on the property, in a hollow in a tree, or on a damp plot of ground. They can breed anywhere, really, where there’s enough moisture.

You can spend all day swatting mosquitoes. But if you don’t get rid of their breeding ground as well, you’re fighting a losing battle. But what’s more, mosquito eggs can go into a dormant state over winter, and then you’re set for the same problem next year again.

Break the cycle fast by calling us in. We’ll give those mosquitos their marching orders. We tackle the problem at the source to ensure that we destroy the eggs and young larvae.

Combine this with the tips that we’ve included below, and those mosquitoes are toast.

Do Consider Using Citronella

Citronella is a scent that bugs don’t like. Burn a citronella candle when you’re sitting outside to keep them at bay. This won’t get rid of them. And it’s not practical to use when you’re sleeping, so it’s just a stopgap measure.

That said, it’ll give you some peace for a while.

You can also buy citronella essential oil and incorporate it into a body lotion, or use it in a diffuser. The scent, however, is strong and, again, it’s a stopgap measure.

Get Rid of Any Standing Water

This is something that we all should be doing anyway. It’s not just mosquitoes that crave a ready source of water. Ants, fleas, termites, and other bugs all need water to survive.

With mosquitoes, though, it’s especially important to cut off their water supply. The eggs are laid in water and require it to hatch.

Go outside and take a look around. Just walk around your outside area quickly.

Look for the following:

  • Standing water sources: It doesn’t have to be a lot of water; the only criteria is that it must be stagnant. Rinse out birdbaths and millstones, and consider draining ponds if you have any.

  • Don’t forget the pot plants: Something that you might have missed is water standing around in the saucers of pot plants.

  • Dripping taps: You should fix any dripping taps as soon as possible. You want to cut off all sources of moisture.

  • Soil that doesn’t drain well: If there are areas with clay soil in your garden, you might want to dig them over and incorporate compost. This will help the soil drain better and stop water pooling in the soil.

Use a Fan

Going to sleep at night with a fan on is not ideal. But it can help prevent mosquitoes from plaguing you, though. Again, this is a stopgap measure, but it can provide temporary relief.

Keeping Windows and Doors Closed

In summer, keeping your windows and doors closed is not a highly practical solution. That said, it could be useful in keeping the insects out of your home.

Fleas, Ticks, and Biting Flies Gnats

As we mentioned, a lot of bugs come out when the weather is warmer. If you’ve got a beloved fur baby, you’ll hate the discomfort they go through when fleas are plaguing them.

Ticks present a danger to your whole family, and so they need to be dealt with as well. A lot of tick bites are nothing more than a nuisance. You probably won’t even know they’ve bitten you.

Unfortunately, there is always the chance that the tick might be infected with the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease in humans. That is a lot more serious and difficult to diagnose. The symptoms include general malaise and aching that might be mistaken for the flu.

The tick could also transmit several other pathogens that could similarly lead to illness.

Fleabites are usually not a cause for concern. Unlike tick bites, though, you’ll be able to tell that you’ve been bitten. The area of the bite becomes intensely itchy, with heat making it even worse. That’s why your poor fur baby will scratch themselves constantly.

For humans, the bites are not a major issue and shouldn’t make us sick. There’s a risk of a bite becoming infected by too much scratching. You could also develop hives.

The effects of fleas on pets is a lot more serious, though. Pets go through the discomfort of the scratching and may develop a sensitivity to the bites. Over time, if left untreated, the animal’s immune system becomes affected by the constant onslaught.

Unfortunately, once you have an infestation of fleas, a chemical solution is your only alternative.

Our pest control measures are effective against a range of pesky insects. We’ll make sure that ticks, fleas, and biting insects are also kept under control.

If you’re in Jackson, MS, call us today and find out how we can make your pest problems go away.
