Why is your system called the Dragonfly®?
In nature, the Dragonfly® is the most
effective mosquito killer. The swamps of Florida would be completely
overrun by mosquitoes if it was not for their great control work. The
Dragonfly Mosquito System® is like an army
of dragonflies protecting your home, chasing and killing mosquitoes.

Is it an overpriced bug light?
This is not a bug zapper! A bug light attracts all types of bugs
looking for light. But dark light does not attract mosquitoes! This
little machine is designed to attract only female
mosquitoes. No, we are not sexist either! These females need to drink
your blood for proteins so that their eggs develop. They are
attracted by the heat, CO2 and Octenol emitted by the machine. They
are electrocuted as they attempt to land on the machine.

You end up attracting all your neighbor's mosquitoes!
Don't worry if it kills mosquitoes that belong to your neighbors, I
am sure they won't sue, and it won't cost you a penny extra!

Does the Dragonfly System®
require any consumable
substances?
The Dragonfly® needs refills of octenol and
a tank of CO2 to perform its function. The Mosquito 'Cognito®
needs refills of Conceal inhibitor. All are available for a nominal
charge from the Mosquito Solutions on-line store.
CO2 Tanks
CO2 tanks are easily available from soft drink distributors, welding
shop suppliers or from one of Praxair locations (see Praxair
map). Some suppliers will let use a tank for free, as long as
you pay for refills. Others will rent it for a nominal amount.
Praxair typically rents their tanks for $4.00/month, and $12.00 for refills.
If used 5 hours per day, a 20 lbs. tank lasts:
30-days at 500-cc.
60 days at 250 cc.
120 days at 125 cc.
Following are expected monthly costs:
Setting 1 - 125cc: $7.00
Setting 2 - 250cc: $10.00
Setting 3 - 500cc: $16.00
125cc setting has been shown to be the
most cost effective operation mode.
Octenol Cartridges
A cartridge lasts 40-60 days
Monthly cost is about $3.50
Conceal Cartridges
A cartridge lasts about 360 hours
Monthly cost is about $3.50
Electricity
Dragonfly: Equal to a 40 Watts Light bulb
Mosquito 'Cognito: 2 AA batteries will last 720 hours

How much
area is covered by the Dragonfly?
Our system is designed to protect a typical activity area, such as
pool area, deck or other entertainment area. The Dragonfly attracts
mosquitoes away from this area, while the Mosquito 'Cognito hides
occupants from the mosquitoes.
As the Dragonfly is a mosquito trap, it needs to attract mosquitoes
in order to control them. Mosquitoes are attracted to the Dragonfly
from up to 100 ft (30 meters) away. They smell the CO2 and Octenol
emitted by the Dragonfly. As they get closer they switch from smell
detection mode to visual approach mode: they are now attracted by the
infra-red lure of the Dragonfly®. Mosquitoes within this 100 ft
radius are attracted to the trap and killed.
The answer is not cut-and-dry. The 100 ft radius is about one acre;
however, if people are on the edge of the circle, they will attract
mosquitoes that are outside the 100 feet radius. Factors such as wind
and physical properties (walls, fences, buildings) will also
interfere (positively and negatively) with the Dragonfly's ability to
attract mosquitoes.
Some mosquitoes are going to miss the Dragonfly. The Mosquito
'Cognito hides occupants of the area from these stray mosquitoes. In
fact this little unit is so powerful that many customers elect to use
it on its own.
<Back to Top>
Does your system offer an effective
alternative to chemical spray?
Our answer is an emphatic yes, our system is an effective
alternative to pesticide spraying. The Dragonfly®
controls mosquito population by killing egg-carrying females and
preventing the birth of additional eggs. Obviously, it does not carry
all the negative impact associated with insecticides, such as effects
on people, birds, animals and other insects. It targets only biting
insects. Keeping the machine operational throughout the breeding
season should maintain a very high and permanent level of protection,
unlike pesticides that will need to be sprayed at regular intervals.
<Back to Top>
How is the unit powered?
The unit is powered with electricity. It uses 115 volts and 60Hz
electricity. Consumption is comparable to a 40 watt light bulb. The
Mosquito 'Cognito® uses 2 AA batteries
(supplied) with a life of 720 hours.

What about acquiring the machine
outside of the United States?
At this time we are building a dealer network and we do not have
distributors in all the countries of the world. We can ship by UPS or
Federal Express. You can also ask us for a special quote to ship the
unit from our factory to an airport close to you for you to pick up.
Please note that the machine is manufactured for international
standards and works on 110 volts. See our World Page
for additional information.
<Back to Top>
What chemicals are used?
The Dragonfly® uses carbon dioxide (CO2)
and octenol (a type of alcohol) to attract mosquitoes. The Mosquito 'Cognito®
uses Conceal inhibitor that hides the presence of potential
preys from mosquitoes. Both the Dragonfly®
and the Mosquito 'Cognito®, as well as the
products they use have received registrations from the United States
Government Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

We may use it on our patio in the summer;
does it give off any smells?
No, the unit does not generate any odor. It does not require any
cleaning or maintenance either.
<Back to Top>
I have mosquitoes in my house.
Will the Dragonfly®
help me?
The Dragonfly is meant to be used outside the house and should
control mosquitoes very well outside, so that you have a minimum or
none inside the house. You can also use Mosquito 'Cognitoes at
different points of entry to the house, so mosquitoes do not detect
presence of preys inside and do not attempt to enter your house.

Do you ship worldwide
The Dragonfly Mosquito System can be shipped anywhere in the world.
It uses 115 volts electricity but can be used with 220 volts along
with an adaptor. As the system is light and compact, it is
economical to ship and can be delivered worldwide within days. Please
email us with your request, or use our on-line inquiry
form. Be sure to include your full address, and we will quickly
respond with a quotation and shipping time. Please see our world
page for additional information.

Where should the unit
be mounted?
Each unit is shipped with an owner's manual that gives detailed and
easy to follow placement and mounting instructions.
Always place the Mosquito 'Cognito dispenser where people
congregate. As a rule of thumb, use one Mosquito 'Cognito dispenser
for gatherings of up to five adults. Use more for larger gatherings.
Satisfactory results depend on the number of people you want to
protect and the severity of the local mosquito population. Experiment
to find the number of Mosquito 'Cognito dispensers that are right for you.
The trick to getting the most from the Dragonfly electronic
biting insect trap is simple:
1) put it between you and the places where
mosquitoes live (forest, pond, stream, etc.),
2) but 10 m (30 ft.) to 15 m (45 ft.) away from
the area you want to protect (deck, pool, patio, etc.).
That's all there is to it! Insects drawn to the Dragonfly electronic
biting insect trap cannot see you because they are too far away and
the Dragonfly electronic biting insect trap destroys them.
<Back to Top>
How long will it take for the system to work?
You should see a difference very quickly, if the Dragonfly®
is properly installed and used in conjunction with the Mosquito 'Cognito®.
To make sure you are entirely satisfied with your Dragonfly System®,
we offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.
<Back to Top>
Will all mosquitoes be destroyed?
No mosquito trap will kill all mosquitoes. This is
why our system includes two Mosquito 'Cognitoes. They will hide you
and your family from stray mosquitoes not captured by the Dragonfly.
We guarantee that you will not want to do without your Dragonfly
System again in the future.
<Back to Top>
What species of mosquitoes does the Dragonfly® kill?
It attracts and kills most species of mosquitoes, as well as other
biting insects such as sand-flies, jiggers, no-see-ums and midges.
<Back to Top>
Our mosquitoes are around 24 hours a day,
not just at dusk/night. Would your product be effective?
The dragonfly® features 2 operating modes: Constant
on and Automatic. If mosquitoes are active
during daytime hours, the machine can be switched to constant on and
will run day and night.
In addition, the dosage of CO2 attractant released can be controlled:
You can select high level for periods of heavy
infestation, and medium level or lower level
for periods of milder infestation.
<Back to Top>
I saw a $795 machine shaped like a cylinder
and a $1,300 propane mosquito catcher mounted on a barbecue grill.
Both claim they will clear an acre of mosquitoes in several weeks.
What area will the Dragonfly®
lure cover?
A single CO2 mosquito trap cannot eradicate mosquitoes over an acre
(3,700 square meters), and we believe, along with most entomologists,
that the claim is misleading for three reasons. First, mosquitoes
move around during their lifetime, and some species are even
considered migratory. So even if it was possible to eradicate all
mosquitoes within an area, others would quickly move in. Second,
mosquitoes are among Mother Nature's most prolific breeders. If only
one male and female survived, under ideal conditions they could
produce 27,000,000 offspring in a month! Finally, all CO2 traps rely
on the wind to disperse CO2. Mosquitoes smell the CO2 and are drawn
to the trap. Since the wind cannot blow in all directions at once, a
CO2 trap cannot attract mosquitoes from every direction at once,
which is what it would have to do to clear the area. Consider this:
The Dragonfly lure produces up to 500-cc/in CO2 and the expensive
propane trap produces between 350 and 500-cc/in CO2. That is roughly
the equivalent of the respiration of two 250-pound (113-kg) men. Now
imagine that two big men sat in a one-acre field all summer.
Furthermore, imagine that both men are perfect mosquito catchers who
never miss a mosquito that lands on them. After six weeks, are there
still mosquitoes in the field? We think so!
