The Dragonfly II lures mosquitoes with a blend of carbon dioxide (CO2), heat and octenol, the same chemical cues that attract mosquitoes and other biting insects in nature. When animals and humans breathe, they exhale an invisible mixture of CO2 and octenol (a type of alcohol). Mosquitoes and biting insects have receptors that detect these chemicals up to 100 feet away. Mosquitoes are attracted by these chemicals and will fly immediately toward the human or animal target they have detected. Mosquitoes also have delicate heat sensors that help them locate their blood supply. As they get closer to their prey, they use these sensors to find landing sites where the blood is closest to the surface.
