Two Mosquito 'Cognitos® are included in every Dragonfly
Mosquito System shipped. However this little unit is so effective
that many customers elect to purchase it and use it on its own (see Testimonials
).
The Mosquito 'Cognito® was developed
under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the
Agricultural Research Service (ARS), the chief scientific research
agency of the United States Department of Agriculture.
When mosquitoes detect the presence of CO2 and octenol (2 substances
exhaled by humans and animals), they immediately change direction and
fly rapidly toward their prey, up to 100 feet away. Up until now, the
only solution to prevent mosquitoes from attacking was to apply a
foul smelling, greasy repellent, or light smoky candles. Mosquitoes
tend to avoid these nasty odors and look for another prey.
The Mosquito 'Cognito®
dispenser emits Conceal™ inhibitor that has a unique
"scent blocking" ability. This is not a repellent, but
rather an inhibitor that binds to the insect's olfactory receptors
and blocks their ability to smell people and animals. If they cannot
track your scent, they cannot get close enough to see you. If they
cannot see you, they cannot bite you.
The Mosquito 'Cognito® inhibitor reduces
mosquito landings on humans by 75% when used properly. (As shown
by a test using a human subject seated at the water's edge of a
Florida breeding site during peak mosquito activity). In independent
tests conducted at the University of Florida test site, mosquito
landings were reduced by up to 80%. This is an environmentally
friendly alternative to traditional citronella, DEET and pesticide sprays.
The unit is quiet and easy to operate. Pull the top and bottom halves
of the Mosquito 'Cognito® dispenser apart
until they click into the ON position. This action opens intake and
discharge vents, and activates a battery-powered fan. Air is forced
into the Conceal™ inhibitor cartridge and the inhibitor enters
the air stream. Push the top and bottom halves of the Mosquito 'Cognito®
dispenser together until they click into the OFF position.
No maintenance is required. Conceal™ inhibitor cartridges are
easily replaced and lasts 360 hours. The unit uses 2 AA batteries
(supplied) with a life of 720 hours.
The unit is durable, built of UV stabilized resin. It closes to
conserve batteries and inhibitor, and to protect motor from rain.
The unit operates in a non toxic mode of action. The patented
Conceal™ is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) for controlling mosquitoes and other biting insects.
